Container Deposit Programs in the Headlines, Or Big Changes in Bottle Bills, or Update on Container Deposit Programs Around the Country

Tuesday, February 9th, 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. - Container Take Back Programs

Susan V. Collins, Executive Director, Container Recycling Institute

Container deposit programs around the country have made headlines in the last few months. Against the backdrop of the difficult 2009 economy, many of the bottle bill battles are about the subject of money, and who benefits from the unredeemed deposits.

The presentation will present updates to state programs and the status of national legislation that would require container deposits in all states. The presentation will also incorporate recent research into greenhouse gas and toxics reductions that result from beverage container recycling and using recycled content in containers. The presentation will make the link between GHG reductions from beverage container recycling into the worldwide GHG reduction strategy, as outlined in the McKinsey report Pathways to a Low Carbon Economy.
