LEEDing the Way to Better Commercial Waste and Recycling Audits

Monday, February 8th, 11:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. - Commercial Recycling

John Culbertson, Vice President, MidAtlantic Solid Waste Consultants

States, cities and counties have been performing waste characterization studies for decades as a means of better understanding their disposed waste stream and subsequently developing recycling programs and diversion strategies.  With the rise of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™, individual buildings now have an incentive to audit their micro waste stream as a pre-requisite to LEED certification for existing buildings.  Despite best intentions of green building proponents, many property managers still see waste audits as a box to be checked on the path to LEED certification – the value of such audits are not otherwise apparent.  This presentation will briefly compare large scale commercial waste characterization studies and LEED waste audits; describe the process for LEED waste audits; discuss recent case studies for a variety of commercial waste audits; and identify opportunities for municipal involvement and improvements in the process.
