Carpet Recycling 101

Tuesday, February 9th, 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. - Product Stewardship

Georgina Sikorski, Executive Director, Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE)

The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to facilitating ways to recover, reuse, and recycle discarded post-consumer carpet before it finds its way into America’s landfills.  CARE’s stewardship, along with its application of real world market solutions and infrastructure creation, has developed into the creation of a new industry centered on the recovery and reuse of post-consumer carpet.  While only in it’s 7th year, the carpet recovery industry has significantly contributed to the overall recovery of polypropylene, nylon 6, nylon 6,6, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) normally lost due to old carpet landfill disposal.  Likewise, the creation of this new industry has stimulated the creation and demand for equipment necessary to collect and process this previously discarded valuable resource.
Since its inception in 2002, CARE has helped to keep over 1 billion pound of old carpet out of landfills through reuse and recycling.
